Haven for a Cause

Haven Collection Lions

Haven gives back on International Wildlife Day

Wildlife conservation is something we are very passionate about and we believe that it is our responsibility to conserve this treasure for future generations.

The Haven Collection wines, our export range, were specifically created to aid in the conservation and protection of one of South Africa’s most majestic animals – the lion.

All over the world lions have been taken as pets, abused in circuses or kept in small confinements for the pleasure of select individuals. The Drakenstein Lion Park is one of the only sanctuaries in the Western Cape providing rescued lions with a safe space free from abuse and persecution where they can live out their natural lives.

The Drakenstein Lion Park, our conservation partner, borders several of our vineyard blocks and the roars from the lions can frequently be heard from our visitor centre, making the park a very real part of the Glen Carlou experience. For every bottle of Haven sold, Glen Carlou donates a Rand per bottle to the Park. These funds are crucial in enabling the park to continue their conservation work.

The Haven Collection consists of a Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and a Shiraz and can currently be found in 12 countries globally, with travel trade a major volume driver and fund contributor. The Haven Cabernet Sauvignon has been selected for the Lufthansa Airlines in-flight pour program, along with the Haven Chardonnay these wines also sail on Celebrity Cruise Lines (Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines) and are served on the prestigious Viking Ocean Cruises. The Haven Collection wines are now available to our Wine Club Members and can be purchased locally through our online wine store.

With an estimated 20 000 lions left in the wild and a continuous decline which has lead to the extinction of wild lions in 26 African countries; sanctuaries like the Drakenstein Lion Park are crucial in educating and raising awareness, aligned with the need to conserve. We are proud to be associated with a park that does such admirable work in improving the quality of life of lions in captivity, locally as well as internationally.

The Park is not involved in commercial breeding or trade and offers lifetime care to all of its animals. All the animals brought to the Park are captive bred / hand reared and cannot be rehabilitated to the wild, but given a chance to living out their natural lives in an enriched and safe environment.

We encourage you to take a drive to The Drakenstein Lion Park located on the Old Paarl Road (R101) near Klapmuts and visit the home of this fantastic cause. “Adopt” a lion or pledge your support by buying a case or two of Glen Carlou Haven wines in celebration of International Wildlife Day.

For more information on their rescue missions or how to “adopt” a lion, visit the Drakenstein Lion Park website.
